After taking time off from a stellar basketball season, Ben Linnell returned to the Paonia track team in time to win the triple jump at Saturday's Cedaredge Invitational. The junior jumper cleared 40-6.25 to set a new personal record and win the event by a mere quarter of an inch over Chris Black of Delta.
Linnell also set a personal record in the high jump, clearing 5-10 to place fifth.
Linnell was the only Paonia athlete to claim a gold Saturday. Paonia scored 30 points to place seventh in team competition.
The 800-meter sprint medley consists of two 100-meter legs, a 200-meter, and an anchor leg of 400 meters. While it's only recognized in the state as a girls' event, it is offered to boys' teams in a handful of meets throughout the season.
On Saturday, 12 male teams competed in the medley relay, including Paonia.
The team of 100-meter runners William Austin and Austin Katzer, 200-meter runner Taylor Walters and anchor 400m runner Cameron Van Vleet finished fourth with a time of 1:50.82.
The 800m relay team of Austin, Josiah Spano, Van Vleet and Walters placed fifth.
In individual track events, Jason Sturgis placed eighth with a time of 5:02 in the 1600m, and Austin was seventh in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.2.
