Even on a bad day they are tough to beat.
On Saturday, the Paonia volleyball team upped its record to 9-0 with a shutout win over Soroco.
Paonia has lost only two sets this season.
The Lady Eagles opened the week with a 3-0 win against Hotchkiss.
"Hotchkiss played a great match," said head coach Krista Carsten. "They blocked very well forcing our hitters to make some adjustments."
Paonia also had 10 serving errors, the worst serving game since the start of the season.
Carson Pipher had 16 of the team's 37 kills in the win. Taylor Carsten served up eight aces and five errors in 20 serves, and had 10 digs with no errors.
Morgan Hartigan had 11 digs with one error, and Easton Hartigan had 19 serve receives with three errors.
On Friday, following the six-hour bus ride to Walden and despite a lower-than-usual hitting percentage of .204, Paonia pulled off a 25-15, 25-14, 25-23 conference win over North Park (2-4 overall, 1-2, 1A/2A Western Slope League). Starting middle hitter Jessie Holt rolled an ankle in game three, said Carsten. "So things were a little tense for a few points." But Carsten made the necessary adjustments and the Lady Eagles came from behind for the win.
Saturday's 3-0 win over Soroco (0-8, 0-3) was a "great overall team effort," said Carsten. "The girls had the opportunity to work on some of the quick plays we've been practicing. In game three, everyone passed on the dime, which made offense really a lot of fun."
The majority of points, said Carsten, came in the team's 35 kills, of which Pipher scored 13, and on their 15 serve aces, led by Taylor Carsten with six.
Paonia hosted Olathe (8-1, 2-0), currently one of the top three teams in the 10-team 3A WSL, Tuesday night. (Scores were not available by press time.) Paonia is up to the challenge, said Carsten, who called the match "A great test for us to see how we compare against a team that is strong both offensively and defensively."
Paonia travels Friday to Rangely (1-1, 4-6). That trip, too, will be a test, said Carsten.blog comments powered by Disqus
