The Paonia Lady Eagles volleyball team added three more conference wins to its record last week, hitting the road to sweep Vail Mountain, West Grand and Hayden. Paonia is now 14-0 overall and 5-0 in 2A/1A Western Slope League competition.
Head coach Krista Carsten called the Oct. 2, 3-0 home win against Vail Mountain (25-21, 25-15, 25-19) "a slow, anticlimactic game," due to numerous rotation calls and lineup checks for Vail. "It just made it really hard to get into a rhythm," said Carsten.
The team scored 39 kills in 91 attacks for the match, with Carson Pipher, Easton Hartigan and Morgan Hartigan adding eight or more, and Jessie Holt contributing seven.
Pipher also led the team in digs with 14, and Taylor Carsten had 24 assists. Paonia also served 16 aces in 72 attempts, with five errors.
Paonia traveled to Kremmling Friday for its 3-0 win over West Grand (7-8, 2-4). The team took a while to get its footing after the long bus ride, said Carsten. In game one, which Paonia won, 26-24, and throughout the entire match, most of West Grand's points were off of Paonia hitting and serving errors.
The team settled in for the final two sets. "Jessie Holt had a great hitting game," with a hitting percentage of .462 (13 attempts, 8 kills, 2 errors), noted Carsten. And Easton Hartigan added 12 kills.
The Mustangs scored 13 kills and two aces against the Eagles. Paonia finished the match with 25-16 and 25-13 wins.
Paonia was on the offensive throughout the match against Hayden (9-4, 5-2). Morgan Hartigan averaged more than five kills per set and had "her best hitting game of the season," said Carsten. Pipher added 13 kills, and Claire Tracy five. Tracy also served four of the team's seven aces.
Paonia played Vail Christian Tuesday night (scores were unavailable at press time), and travel to Meeker Friday. Paonia's total game record is 42-3, and two of those losses were to Meeker.
"We definitely will need to be on top of our game to pick up the two wins," said Coach Carsten.blog comments powered by Disqus
