The Paonia girls' basketball team remained in second place in the 2A Western Slope League standings following its 74-31 win over rival Hotchkiss on Feb. 18. Hotchkiss trailed, 7-5, at the end of the first period, but Paonia jumped to a 32-9 lead to end the half.
The Eagles (15-4, overall, 8-1 WSL) have been plagued with slow starts, including last week's loss to Meeker, said head coach Scott Rienks. "Once we got going, once we got a couple of shots and were able to get the press on, then it changed the whole look." Paonia ran four different presses in the first half, and Hotchkiss wasn't able to adjust.
Hotchkiss (7-2) also lost to Meeker last week, and remained in third place ahead of this week's District 5 tournament at Soroco.
The four top teams, including No. 4 Plateau Valley (10-7, 5-3), hosted pigtail (elimination) games Tuesday night. Hotchkiss' Lady Bulldogs played No. 7 Rangely (2-7, 2-17) and those results will be in next week's paper.
Assuming both teams win, they will likely meet again Friday night at Soroco.
The final four teams will complete the tournament Saturday to determine seeding for next week's regional tournaments.
The district winners will compete in the regional tournament at Grand Junction March 7-8, with the time and location to be determined.
