Delta seventh-grade running back Noah Higgs rests on his backside after falling backwards into the end zone against Paonia’s Eagles in game one of the annual middle school playoffs. Higgs’ score helped Delta win after six overtimes.Last Thursday's annual Middle School Football Tournament pitted the four Delta County schools against each other in a winner-take-all afternoon of football. Teams played each other for one half (two quarters) with the winners moving on and losers dropping into a consolation bracket.

Hotchkiss seventh-grader Billy Bronkin draws a crowd during last Thursday’s middle school football playoffs in Delta. Bronkin was eventually hauled to the ground by the Cedaredge defense after gaining several yards. Hotchkiss won this game and played in the championship game against Delta. A 23-yard field goal by Sergio Campos earned Hotchkiss a 3-0 victory and the title.The day started with a wild game in the seventh-grade division. Delta and Paonia were on the field for the opening contest of the tournament.
A see-saw affair lasted for six overtimes before Delta came away with the win.
Both Hotchkiss and Delta swept through the competition that led to title games under the lights at Delta Middle School's football field.
In the seventh grade, Hotchkiss' young Bulldogs battled two quarters against a tough defensive team from Delta. With time running out, Hotchkiss coach Eric Hollembeak decided to have his team kick a field goal to win the game. That announcement to his team was met with enthusiasm, for various reasons.
