Each June, 2,000 Ride The Rockies cyclists embark on a six- or seven-day bicycle tour of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. The route changes annually. On Feb. 1, the Denver Post announced the route for the 24th annual bicycle tour, to be presented by Wells Fargo June 14-19. The cyclists will begin their 380-mile loop in Glenwood Springs, then travel 80 miles to Hotchkiss over McClure Pass. After spending Sunday night in Hotchkiss, the cyclists will pedal to Gunnison via the North Rim of the Black Canyon, another ride of 80 miles. As a host community, Hotchkiss will be expected to provide inexpensive community meals and entertainment. An organization in each host community receives a $5,000 grant. The tour continues to Salida, via Monarch Pass, then from Salida to Leadville, a ride of 60 miles. After spending Thursday night in Leadville, the cyclists will tackle Independence Pass (elev. 12,095 feet) en route to Aspen. The final leg of the tour will take bicyclists from Aspen to Glenwood Springs, a ride of 40 miles. About 4,000 applications are received annually for the popular event. The 2,000 riders are selected in a lottery registration. For more information, visit www.ridethe rockies.com.
