Jack R. Austin died May 12, 2017, at his home in Austin. He was 77.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 19, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta.
He was born in Delta on Aug. 25, 1939, to Clarence and Delores (Richardson) Austin. He spent his childhood in Eckert and Cedaredge. His family homesteaded near the base of Grand Mesa in the early 1900s.
He worked in logging, truck driving, building roads, mining and other various trades. He was a self-taught mechanic.
He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, gardening, discovering new roads and being outdoors.
He is survived by his daughters, Sherry (Aaron) Willis of Cedaredge, Janet (Craig) Geesing of Montrose, Kay (Robert) Proctor of Delta and Tina (Chris) Chandler of Montrose; a sister, Joy Allmon of Grand Junction; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his companion of 20 years, Nancy Hensing; a brother, Clarence Austin Jr.; and a sister, Dorothy Stengel.

Thanks to the efforts of state Rep. Millie Hamner, House District 61, Colorado State University plans to re-open the Rogers Mesa research site.
The facility was taken out of operation in 2011, due to budget cuts throughout the CSU system.
