CHS play challenges theatre students with new elements

On Nov. 17 and 18, the Cedaredge High School Theatre Department performed its fall production of "The Love of Three Oranges," a modern adaptation of an Italian fairytale originating in 1761. The comedy incorporated elements new to the CHS Theatre Department, including more sound effects, pyrotechnics, and blocking that moved actors to all corners of the auditorium.

Cedaredge High School and Middle School (CHS and CMS) combined to celebrate Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 10, with an assembly honoring military veterans and their families. The moving and inspirational program included patriotic music and speeches, heartfelt essays, and a stirring video -- all performed by students with assistance from area veterans and teachers and staff.

After playing in Gunnison on Tuesday, Sept. 19, Cedaredge Bruins' softball team raced past the Cowboys, 21-8, and now rests in second place in the 3A WSL District 5 race.

Cedaredge (4-1, 4-7 overall) broke a 7-7 tie in the sixth inning with a 14-run barrage to propel the Bruins to a 21-8 decision over Gunnison (2-3, 2-11).

Cedaredge High School won the Class 1A State Football Championship (over Buena Vista 18-16) in 2012 and has built a tradition of excellence extending to last season's 8-3 season which saw the Bruins reach quarterfinal play before losing to eventual state champion Strasburg, 29-11. Strasburg went on to defeat Paonia 49-28 in semifinal action and dumped Meeker 34-14 in the finals.

Cedaredge High School graduate Lexee Wilson on Aug. 10 was named the top vocational agriculture student in the state and presented with the Future Farmers of America Colorado Star Farmer award. She will be leaving soon for college at Colorado State University in Fort Collins with plans to continue her success in agriculture by pursuing a veterinary medicine career and eventually giving back to the community that she says "has given me so much."

The Cedaredge men's track team had 27 top-eight placers and scored 140 points to finish second Saturday at the Delta Panther Invitational. In their first meet of the season the Bruins won four golds, four silvers, and five bronze medals.

Cedaredge's basketball fortunes are on a roller coaster ride for the boys while the girls have rebounded from a loss to Paonia two weeks ago and posted a pair of wins this past week.

The boys hosted Delta on Jan. 17 and suffered a 69-58 loss. Later in the week Cedaredge visited Coal Ridge where it was thumped 83-63 by the Titans.

This year's First Colorado National Bank basketball tournament began its sponsorship under the initial format of all four Delta County schools participating in a pre-Christmas tournament in Delta. In 1994, the tournament was known as the Bank of the West Basketball Tournament with all four schools in the county playing at Delta High School on two consecutive days (Thursday and Friday) before Christmas break began.

Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee is pleased to announce that Mckenzie Moore is this year's recipient of the County Sheriff's of Colorado (CSOC) scholarship award for Delta County.

With the exception of Gunnison High School's boys' team, the 16-team field was basically no match for Class 2A Paonia and Cedaredge on the track.

Paonia's girls won their division with 158 points with Cedaredge placing second with 109 points. The boys' division was won by Gunnison (154) with Cedaredge (134.5) second and Paonia (71) third.

Plans and arrangements for their big trip to Washington, D.C., are being finalized as members of the Cedaredge High School marching band and choir look forward to their by-invitation performance at the nation's Memorial Day celebration this year.

The community and the band members themselves have been working to raise necessary support for the $63,000 educational adventure that will include 41 members of the band and choir.

Cedaredge High School will host its graduation for the class of 2016 two weeks earlier than usual. Graduating CHS seniors will receive their diplomas this year at the school's commencement on May 15, a Sunday, beginning at 4 p.m.

Like many of the athletes from the Delta and Cedaredge High School volleyball teams, I attended this past weekend's state championship tournament for the first time.

The outstanding group of seniors on the Cedaredge High School girls' volleyball team finished with a victory.

Cedaredge beat Kiowa on the second day of the state volleyball championship tournament at the Denver Coliseum last weekend in four sets 25-14, 20-25, 25-19, 25-22 and sent the Bruin seniors out as winners.

Eagles off to fourth straight state VB trip

The Eagles are going back to state.

Rebounding from a tough loss to Cedaredge in the District championship, Paonia rallied on the road last Saturday at Regionals to beat Ignacio in three sets, and defeated Ridgway in four sets to earn a fourth consecutive trip to the 2A state championship tournament this weekend in Denver.

Volleyball rivals Paonia and Cedaredge met in the finals of the 2A District 5 Tournament last Saturday, and just like the regular season matches between the Eagles and Bruins, fans at neutral Grand Valley High School were treated to an outstanding match that needed extra points to decide the victor.

In a fiercely competitive match, Cedaredge (19-4) won the five-set nailbiter 25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 13-25, 18-16.

The top three teams in 1A football stayed the same most of the year and each squad found out its playoff matchups when the brackets were released last Sunday morning.

Two-time defending state champion and three-time defending Western Slope Conference Champion Paonia (8-1) will play 14th-seeded Ellicott at Paonia Town Park on Saturday.

Boisterous Bruin fans draw a yellow flag

Rambunctious rooting for the home team and celebrations of success at the Cedaredge Bruins' Homecoming game against Aspen drew a yellow flag when the visiting team convinced the ref to have Cedaredge fans tone things down a bit.

But after a delayed review of the episode via the CHSAA rule book, it was found that the ref had been in error and that boisterous Bruin fans were playing by the rules.

The Bruins were knocked out of first place in the 1A WSL football standings after losing, 32-12, to Meeker's Cowboys last Friday night in Meeker.

Meeker piled up 522 yards of offense, 438 on the ground and 84 through the air, on its way to an important conference contest.

Cedaredge High School's softball team clinched a league title a week ago. Last week's loss to a determined Gunnison team, on Oct. 8, spoiled a perfect league record but did little else. The Bruins enter this week's post-season play with a 12-7 overall record with some quality play against tough opponents that could help pave the way for Cedaredge to go deep into the playoffs.

The Cedaredge Bruins upped their softball league mark to 5-0 over the past week with a non-conference win over Palisade and a 3A District 5 decision over Meeker.

Against Palisade the Bruins avenged a loss to the Bulldogs, 8-4, on Sept. 18 in tournament play in the Delta Invitational Tournament. The rematch on Sept. 22 was an 8-5 win for Cedaredge.
