Two constituents came forward at the Orchard City Town Board meeting on March 8 to question trustees about the water rate increase.

Jan Gage, a former trustee, expressed concern for senior citizens in town on fixed incomes who would be hurt financially by the doubling of water rates.

The Triantoses were chosen as this year's sweethearts because they are regular diners and supporters at the Delta Senior Center, which serves meals every weekday at 12 noon.

Seniors, disabled vets eligible for property tax exemption

The Colorado Constitution establishes a property tax exemption for senior citizens and disabled veterans. For those who qualify, 50 percent of the first $200,000 in actual value of the primary residence is exempted from property tax. The State of Colorado pays the property taxes on the exempted value.

Charles Morris of Grand Junction, a Colorado native and an accomplished artist, gave a seminar on his work to other artists in the PACE fine arts program at the Eckert Horizons facility last week.

It was a presentation with a true family flavor as Morris' sister, June, participates in the three-times-weekly art program at PACE, and she served as the model for Morris' demonstration.

Parks pass costs more

The Western Slope No-Fee Coalition reports that new legislation will eliminate the National Park Service's $10 lifetime Senior Pass (formerly Golden Age Pass) and replace it with a pass costing $80. Parks can begin charging the new price as soon as their internal systems are updated.

Senior CommUnity Meals, a program of Volunteers of America, is assembling emergency "blizzard boxes" to distribute to their homebound older adult clients beginning late November. The emergency food boxes will contain enough food for five meals in the event a storm hits the Montrose, Delta and San Miguel counties service areas.

PACE celebrates eighth anniversary

Senior CommUnity Care, a Volunteers of America program, is celebrating its eight-year anniversary for the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) which features comprehensive, coordinated care for adults age 55 and older.

The PACE program is currently serving a total of 306 participants in both Montrose and Delta counties with the care, medical treatment and support they need to achieve the highest quality of life -- while remaining independent as long as possible.

Local professionals share experiences at Senior Law Day

Two Cedaredge businesswomen were invited recently to give a presentation of their professional knowledge at the Senior Law Day seminar in Grand Junction.

Phyllis Hoffman and Scharee Atchison were among those who addressed the assemblage that totalled an estimated 400 people during the full day of seminars on various topics. Their topic addressed "myths and facts" about long-term care issues, Atchison told the DCI.

VOA lease amended

Volunteers of America (VOA) will no longer lease the kitchen at the Delta Senior Center to prepare meals for its clients because VOA has acquired a new kitchen. However, VOA wishes to continue to serve meals at the Senior Center.

A Little Help is holding two meetings

For those who missed the June 1 meeting in Paonia, the nonprofit A Little Help North Fork Valley (formerly Aging in Place) will hold informational meetings in Crawford and Hotchkiss on Thursday, June 23.

Group representatives will briefly describe the grassroots efforts that led the group to the Denver-based A Little Help, and give an overview of the organization and how it works. The nonprofit, which seeks to help seniors remain independent and living in their homes for as long as possible, also seeks members, volunteers, paid service providers, and individuals willing to help with outreach and fundraising.

Tax preparation for seniors has positive impact

According to a report provided to the town board on the annual free income tax preparation project for seniors, adjusted gross incomes of those using the service ranged from over $110,000 to less than zero dollars. The average adjusted gross income of the free service's clients was $24,000.

Seniors enjoy winter outing

Eighteen cross-country skiers and snowshoers from the Cedaredge Senior Hikers group came out for the annual end-of-the-snow-season trek down to Ward Creek Reservoir from the trailhead near Thunder Mountain Cabins.

It was a gorgeous spring day and the warm conditions saw the group shedding sweaters, hats and gloves as they moved down the mountain.

Elks-sponsored meal serves 86

A wonderful holiday treat was enjoyed by 86 seniors on Tuesday, Dec. 8, as the Delta Elks Lodge No. 1235 sponsored the third and final special meal this year at the Delta Senior Center, 247 Meeker Street.

Through a grant from the Grand Lodge, part of the Elks National Foundation, this was the second year the Delta Elks sponsored sumptuous meals, at no charge, for senior citizens in the Delta area.

Presented by Community First Foundation and FirstBank, Colorado Gives Day is an annual statewide movement to celebrate and increase philanthropy through online giving. The event is powered by ColoradoGives.org, a year-round, online giving website.
