Sweitzer State Park get kids on bikes

When Scott Rist learned that 50 percent of the kids in Delta County don't own a bicycle he decided to take action.

Rist, a senior park ranger for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, applied for a grant from the Colorado Parks Foundation to buy bicycles for Sweitzer Lake State Park which is located just south of the town of Delta.

The Delta County Memorial Hospital Foundation invites everyone to participate in the sixth annual Pea Green Pedal on Saturday, Sept. 9, beginning from the Lions Pavilion at Confluence Park.

There is an 18- or 4-mile bike ride or a 5k fun run/walk around the lake.

After a full day of working the Telluride Yoga Festival, Nancy Stechert, the owner of the Yoga Tree in Hotchkiss, loaded up her stuff and headed back home, where a group of about 20 bicyclists from all over the world were waiting for her, road-weary and hungry, having just pulled into town on their 50th day of a cross-country bike ride to bring awareness to the issue of Type 1 Diabetes. Stechert and the Yoga Tree hosted the riders last Saturday, providing a place to stay and a hot meal.
