Larry Barksdale, 81, loving husband and dad, grandpa, uncle and dear friend to many in the Cedaredge area recently lost his two-year battle with Mesothelioma. He passed away on Sept. 26th with Becky, his wife of 61 years, at his side. Larry and Becky's children were all able to spend several quiet days together with Becky after his passing to share their memories.
Larry was born in 1937 in southeast Missouri. His family moved to La Junta, Colo., when he was a young boy, then soon moved to Rocky Ford, where he graduated from high school in 1955. In 1957 he married his longtime sweetheart Becky Johannes and they moved to Golden where he attended the Colorado School of Mines, graduating in 1963 with an Engineer of Mines degree.
He mined at Climax and Gilman as they started their family but soon decided to move to southern California where he worked in fire retardant drywall manufacturing. After moving to central California, Larry was hired by the Hexcel Corporation, moving his family to Arizona, Texas, Nevada and eventually back to California. He retired from Hexcel after 28 years. He and Becky then decided to return to Colorado, this time on the Western Slope, in Cedaredge. Here they spent 24 years, acquiring numerous friends that they considered their "Colorado Family."
Larry enjoyed spending time with his family most of all, at home and on numerous family road and camping trips as his children were growing up. After retiring, he and Becky were able to make several trips visiting their favorite spots such as Yellowstone, family reunions in Missouri, and numerous other trips to see the beauty of the United States, that he loved so much. His other interests included studying the Bible, gardening and reading. Larry and Becky attended Thunder Mountain Church of Christ in Delta, and he leaves behind many friends acquired there over the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Eva of Rocky Ford and his sister Peggy Sutton of Cedaredge. He is survived by his three children, Lisa (David) Maestas of Arizona, Lori Barksdale of Cedaredge and Bill (Karen) Barksdale of California. He is dearly loved by his grandchildren Megan, Wyatt and Chloe of California and Jake, USMC, Washington DC. He is also survived by his brother Hugh Don (Marilyn) Barksdale of Kentucky, as well as nieces and nephews, and his many dear friends locally and across the country.
Plans for a Remembrance Service are pending and will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers or meals, the family is requesting that donations be made in Larry's name to HopeWest, PO Box 24, Delta, CO 81416.
