With stands full of raucous fans, fired up for the Cedaredge Homecoming football game, the Bruins played their hearts out against the Olathe Pirates on Friday, Sept. 28.

The two conference foes jousted between the 20 yard lines for much of the game. Neither offense seemed capable of sustaining drives as both teams struggled to get into the red zone. One Bruin drive stalled in the first quarter when quarterback Jared Reynolds was picked off.

A few plays later the fumble bug struck as teams swapped fumbles and left fans wondering which team was going to take control. With a little more than a minute left in the half, the Bruins had the ball deep in their own territory. Dusty Emig swept out to the right, hoping to pick up six yards for the first down. As he bounced off one tackler, the fans got excited. Another missed tackle at the 15 and Emig was in the clear. The fans rose to their feet and roared as the Cedaredge junior scampered 92 yards to score. The point after kick went wide right, but the Bruins were on the scoreboard and up 6-0 at halftime.

As Jared Reynolds and Dalia Alejandre were crowned Homecoming king and queen, the hometown fans had plenty to cheer about.

The second half was a mirror image of the first. The Cedaredge offense could not find a weakness in the Pirate defense, and the same was true for the Olathe offense. The two teams dueled between the 20s again for all of the third period and much of the fourth. Olathe managed a late score in the fourth, and were successful on their point after to edge Cedaredge at 7-6.

The Bruins had a total of 220 yards of offense. Jared Reynolds completed four of nine passes, hitting three different receivers for a total of 43 yards. Junior Zach McMillan caught two passes and sophomores Jacob Brown and Colby Rupp each pulled in a pass.

On the ground, Dusty Emig was the leading rusher with 106 yards, with 92 of these yards coming on Bruin's scoring play in the second quarter. Quarterback Jared Reynolds and senior Wade Barnard were the workhorses for the Bruins. Each tallied 12 runs, with Reynolds gaining 43 yards and Barnard picked up 26.

Reynolds was also impactful on defense with eight tackles, including a sack and a fumble recovery. Joshua Jenkins and Toby Waddell also got to the quarterback for sacks, and Waddell had seven tackles. Taj VanderLinde had six.

The win moved Olathe to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in league play. The Pirates will be on the road Friday, Oct. 5, to Paonia. The Eagles are coming off a big 41-0 win over Hotchkiss.

For the Cedaredge Bruins, they will host the Meeker Cowboys on Friday, Oct. 5. The Cowboys are 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in league action.
