A pair of diamond wins in non-conference play has Delta High School showing a 4-2 mark overall in 2018. The Panthers munched Montrose 12-0 to begin play last week on Aug. 28. The 4A Rifle Bears brought an unblemished record to town on Aug. 30 and suffered their first loss of the season, 9-1, and left town with a 4-1 mark. Montrose, a 5A/4A member of the Southwestern League, finished the week at 4-3.
Against Montrose, sophomore Hailee Ruble pitched a one-hitter for the win. Ruble was the pitcher of record against Rifle on Thursday, Aug. 30, and upped her season record to 3-1 with another one-hitter in a 9-1 decision over the Bears.
Delta's hitting stars against Montrose included senior Jenna Sutliff who was 3-4 with a pair of doubles, scored two runs and drove in one run. Senior Alyssa Trujillo was also a three-hit leader for the Panthers and finished the game with two doubles and scored three times. Makayla Kortz, another senior on Delta's roster, went 2-4, scored twice and had one RBI. Ruble collected two hits in the game, including a double, scored once and had an RBI as well.
Sophomore catcher Keely Porter was 1-4 on the day and knocked in three Panthers. Senior Reagan Clay had a double in a two-hit day and scored once herself to help Delta earn the 12-0 victory.
Ruble had the big bat for Delta against Rifle to go with her pitching performance. She had three hits, including another double, and drove in three Panthers in the win. Close behind Ruble's performance was Porter's 2-2 day which included a double and two RBIs. Sutliff had two hits and scored three times for Delta while Clay had a hit, scored once and recorded an RBI. Kortz's day at the plate included a double, and she added to the winning score by scoring once.
Delta was scheduled to play a doubleheader against the visiting Palisade Bulldogs, (2-3 in the 4A WSL) and are scheduled to face Basalt in Delta on Sept. 6 at 4 p.m. The Panthers open the following week with a Tuesday (Sept. 11) contest at Gunnison with varsity play set to commence at 3 p.m.
