Colton Godwin is about to become a Grizzly. Last Friday the Paonia senior signed to play soccer at Adams State University in Alamosa, which competes in the NCAA Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Godwin plans to study business marketing after taking a business class this year with Brent McRae. "It just really intrigued me," he said.
Soccer has been a part of Godwin's life since he can remember.
Godwin grew up in Paonia and started kicking a ball around at age 4, with dad Ben, with the Delta County Soccer Club, as his coach. With no soccer teams in the North Fork area, Godwin commuted the last four years to play Class 4A soccer for coach Elaine Wood and the Delta Panthers.
During Godwin's first three years he was a central midfielder, and this year shifted to left wing. That's the position he will likely play at ASU.
"He has been good at this game probably since he was born," said Wood. "He's a natural at this game and he should be playing at a high level." She describes him as "quick, extremely skilled, and super intelligent on the field. You don't see very many kids where it is just natural. He belongs in soccer."
Godwin is also a member of the Eagles basketball team, which will compete at the state championships this week. He is the eighth senior out of 38 members of the class of 2017 to commit to playing sports in college.
Godwin said he looked at one other school before being urged by PHS teacher Will Forrest to visit Adams State. He attended a camp and liked what he saw in the team and the coaches. "It just felt like the right place," he said. He believes the school will provide professional coaching and allow him exposure to other opportunities that will allow him to be involved in the sport beyond college.
"We're excited for him," said Wood. "We're excited to see what happens."
On May 18, officers of the Delta Police Department, with the assistance from the Delta County Sheriff's Office and Montrose County Sheriff's Office, conducted a search warrant at 960 Crawford Avenue, Delta. The warrant was related to drugs, drug use and possession, drug manufacturing and distribution, firearms, cell phones and any other items which may be illegal, stolen or otherwise implicating in criminal activity.
