The Hotchkiss boys scored 45 points to place eighth at the 1A/2A Western Slope League meet, held Friday and Saturday at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction.
In his first year in the 800-meter run, junior Sam Rodriguez took more than 10 seconds off of his season-best time to win bronze.
Zack Allen cleared 6-01 to place second in the high jump.
Colton Peebles placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 42.12 seconds. The time is more than a second ahead of his 11th-place state placing and puts him in the top 10 in state top-18 rankings. "I'm extremely happy," said Peebles, a senior whose goal is to get a spot on the podium this year.
It's only his third hurdles competition of the season.
Peebles last ran at Cedaredge on April 1 for a fifth-place time of 43.73. "It was a huge jump," said Peebles. He said he doesn't necessarily have perfect form, and that can result in lost time. But his coaches told him that as long as his form is "decent," he said, "I can make up time in between hurdles."
Peebles also finished sixth in the 200m dash with a time of 24.27 seconds, ran on the 4x100 relay team with Keaton Coe, George Arroyo and Cesar Camacho that finished fifth (48.47) after a fumbled handoff.
Peebles also ran the second leg on the 4x400m relay with Sam Rodriguez, Gabe Rodriguez and Zack Allen. The season-best time of 3:39.39 earned them a second-place finish and puts them in a state-qualifying position in MaxPreps top-18 state rankings.
Peebles said he didn't expect to make finals in the hurdles and 200m dash. In the upcoming Cedaredge Bruin Invitational, the final qualifying meet before state, he hopes to compete in his first long jump of the season.
