Dear Editor:

To all my friends who are proud and honored to call themselves Republicans, I want and need you to know that I like you. I work with you, I have meals with you, I watch movies, plays, outdoor concerts with you. We go to the same events and sit next to each other. We have cried and hugged at mutual friends' memorials. When we go to the post office or the market, we stop and talk about family and life. You are a part of my life and I'm so thankful that you are. I also know that because I'm a Democrat we don't share the same political views and to tell you the truth, I'm okay with that. It's important to have a balance in life. My wife and I have been married for over 36 years and we still don't agree on everything, but I adore her and respect her views.

That said, I need you to look at how far your party has strayed from the traditional Republican values you hold so dear and for a few moments, focus on your own moral values. Right now, the leader of your party believes that it's okay to separate children from their parents because he wants to take a stand on immigration. Now I know you, and I know that even though you believe in strong borders and legal immigration, you don't believe separating families and placing children in cages is okay. You have shared with me that your fathers and mothers fought the Nazis in WWll and I know that you don't believe that any Nazi has good on their side. You have shared with me how much you value truth and honesty, so I know it's not okay that the leader of your party is on record for lying to the public over 3,200 times in his speeches and interviews since taking office.

You have shared with me how much you value the relationship between a husband and wife, so I know it's not okay with you that the leader of your party has had numerous affairs and lied about them. You have shared with me how painful it is when your child is bullied, so I know it's not okay when the leader of your party makes fun of a handicapped person and calls other politicians racist names. You have shared with me how wonderful it is to travel abroad and be consumed by the sights and sounds of the countries you visit, so I know it's not okay with you that the leader of your party ridicules and humiliates the leaders of the countries you love to visit.

You have shared with me how vital it is that we have fair and legal voting and that no one takes advantage of that right, so I have to ask why is it okay with you, that the leaders of your party blocked a bid to extend election security grants to the states? You have shared with me how proud you are to call yourself an American and how it angers you when the leader of the Russian government attacks his own people and supports other countries that do not support human rights, so I know it's not okay with you when the leader of your party stands with the leader of the Russian government and defends his views above the views of America's FBI, CIA and NSA. I'm not asking you to renounce your membership in the Republican party, but I am asking you to save it! You and I share something sacred, we love our country and everything it stands for. I'm asking you to contact the leaders of the party you say you love and tell them that if they stand up for what's right and let this president know that what he is doing is wrong, you will not kick them out of office, but instead support them for standing up for the American values you and I share.
