After a 37-year career in law enforcement, including 15 years as Delta County undersheriff and 16 years as Delta County sheriff, Fred McKee has decided he will not seek another term in office. His current four-year term ends in January 2019. "It's been a wonderful career," McKee said.
Undersheriff Mark Taylor announced his intention to run for the office of sheriff at the Delta County Republicans' central committee meeting Tuesday night.
"It has been my pleasure to have worked for the Delta County Sheriff's Office for the past 29 years," Taylor said. "I am committed to upholding the longstanding tradition of excellence that has elevated the Delta County Sheriff's Office to one of the most respected law enforcement agencies in the state."
A graduate of the Criminal Justice Academy at Delta-Montrose Technical College, Taylor joined the Delta County Sheriff's Office as a patrol deputy in 1989. He was promoted to patrol sergeant and then assigned as an undercover drug investigator for the 7th Judicial District Drug Task Force. In January 2003 he was appointed undersheriff to Sheriff-elect Fred McKee.
