Softball season winds down

Just two games are left in the Panthers' regular season schedule, and both could be impacted by rainy weather. Regardless, the Delta team is confident of qualifying for regional competition next week.

"We could be hosting, but we don't know yet," said Jeremy McCormick, the athletic director at Delta High School.

The team was scheduled to play Gunnison on Oct. 2 and Cedaredge on Oct. 4, both at home.

Under Coach Jerry Sandoval, the team has racked up an impressive record of 18-2 and is undefeated in league play, 10-0.

Last week, the Panthers easily handled Montrose and Basalt to add to the win column.

According to the CHSAANow.com softball poll, voted upon by coaches and select media from around the state, Delta is ranked fourth in the state. University, Strasburg and Eaton occupy the top three spots.

The ranking -- the first for the Delta team -- gives players even more confidence, said short stop Jenna Sutliff. "It's pretty exciting," she said.
