Paonia resident Vanette A. Hambek died July 31, 2018, at Paonia Care and Rehab Center. She was 91.
She was born in Minot, N.D., July 2, 1927, to Loyd and Vivian Elsberry.
She married Walter Robert Hambek in 1946. They owned a flower shop and greenhouses in Byers for many years. They retired to Paonia with their daughter in 1995.
Mrs. Hambek enjoyed making everyone feel welcome. She had a passion for the color red and for flowers, winning awards from the garden club in Tioga, N.D., for most beautiful yard in town.
She lived at Paonia Care and Rehab for the past 5 1/2 years.
She is survived by four children, Thomas Hambek of Byers, Linda Granbois of Williston, N.D., Celia (Leo) Keslar of Paonia and Larry (Bonnie) Hambek of Midland, Texas; seven grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by four siblings and her husband of 54 years.
A memorial service was held Aug. 7 at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Paonia. Inurnment followed at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the activities fund of Paonia Care Center.
